Michael Chapman

Michael is a geriatrician and palliative medicine physician who works as medical director of palliative care at Canberra Hospital. His PhD thesis, “The ethics of decision making in dementia:  Making sense of senselessness”, received the Monash Primary and Allied Health School Leon Piterman award in 2018. Michael’s academic interests also include using systems thinking in healthcare, the integration of specialist palliative services into aged care, and quality dying in the acute setting. Michael has received over $250,000 in grant funding as part of the INSPIRED trial team seeking to integrate specialist palliative care into aged care facilities. He has over 25 peer-reviewed publications in press, and has editorial roles with multiple journals. Michael has academic appointments at ANU and UTS, sits on the RACP training committee for palliative medicine and was co-founder and editor of the online community Palliverse ( which seeks to extend the conversation about palliative care in our community. Michael is the chair of ANZSPM’s special interest group responding to COVID-19 and sits on the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce palliative care and older people panel.
